6th - 8th Grades

NEOC supports the curiosity Wolves — our Middle School-age campers — have and the independence and social connection they crave. Activities encourage them to take risks, enjoy practicing and mastering concepts and skills, and explore trust. All of this is within a framework that supports and builds self-awareness and self-confidence. Small group sizes ensure that counselors will know each camper in a personalized way!

Wolves are given opportunities to be leaders in our community and mentor fellow campers of all ages.

No matter how many weeks a wolf chooses to spend at NEOC, they leave with greater confidence in themself and ready to advocate for the natural world around them! They enjoy an immersion and independence that is typical of an overnight camp experience, with the joy of sharing camp stories at home with their family each night.

Core Activities

Camp days are divided into five activity periods, plus lunchtime. Campers spend their three morning activity periods on core activities. They opt into two afternoon sign-up activities each day.

Core activities for Wolves are:

  • Archery
  • Canoeing
  • Fire building
  • Garden exploration with specialists from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society
  • Science
  • Shelter building
  • Trail walks
  • Wood burning

Sign-Up Activities

Examples of the afternoon sign-ups that campers in grades 2nd-8th opt into are:

  • Art
  • Capture-the-flag
  • Disc golf
  • Dodgeball
  • Drawing
  • Dream catchers
  • Field games
  • Friendship bracelets
  • Leaf printing
  • Nature weaving
  • Ponding
  • Rock painting
  • Rounders (British baseball)
  • Rugby
  • Science experimentation
  • Sewing
  • Slip-n-slide
  • Soccer
  • Storytime
  • Ultimate frisbee
  • Yoga

Structure of a Week

Each week begins with the whole camp gathering for call-and-repeat songs, expectation setting, and introductions to the counselors. Then, age-divided groups head-out for team building.

Each day ends with group time where Wolves have an opportunity to reflect on their day and prioritize the sign-up activities offered the next afternoon.

Thursdays are our theme days, which are different each week and revealed with excitement on Thursday morning! It is a chance for Wolves to conquer new challenges and enjoy twists on familiar activities.

Camp ends each week with s'mores on Friday afternoons!

Every day I picked him up he was smiling, dirty, and full of stories about all of his fun activities and the amazing counselors. He told me over and over again it was the best camp he’d ever been to and at 13 that’s a a tall order because he’s been so many over the past 8 years. He loved it so much we added two weeks! His patch is proudly displayed in his room. He wants to return next year and honestly part of the reason why is because he thinks of NEOC as a little summer family. Congratulations for doing what you do. These kids feel it and appreciate it, and I do too as a parent. They are only young once and you help them rejoice in what it means to be young and carefree and full of wonder. Thank you!!!!" J.R-C., Northborough
My son has greatly enjoyed camp so far — all the outdoor activities, the counselors, and making new friends. He specially mentioned the hikes, playing "camouflage" in the woods, and archery as a special highlight." It is interesting to see campers of all ages interact with each other in their favorite things and playing games. Making things with other campers that are not just in my group is fun. I also really like canoeing. It is very peaceful and enjoyable and I can watch wildlife closer then usual. Making things is great too. I especially liked learning how to make slime. And it is cool that the compass, binoculars, and candles are usable. Going into the trails are amazing as well. Learning how to shelter-build is a great skill to have. Last but not least, I am very grateful for learning how to make friendship bracelets." J.C. (a camper), Newton Lower Falls
I loved, loved, loved the slower paced, all outdoors, and no screen or electronics orientation for my son. Brilliant! And loved Elm Bank — a glorious place for a camp. Our family had a great experience." I loved, loved, loved the slower paced, all outdoors, and no screen or electronics orientation for my son. Brilliant! I love the positive feedback my sons receive from their counselors on their way to the car after camp. It means a lot to my oldest, who is very hard on himself. I can't believe the team keeps the fun going outside all day. It's so great for my boys to be away from screens!
